Kayo: Growing up when I was about sixteen or seventeen there wasn’t anything to do at home. I mean really not sh*t. We were in the desert, at house parties all the time and it just gets old. I loved to dance though. I was in a little group and we would go to competitions crumpin’ and jerkin’ [laughs]. Back then, we danced in people’s music videos, but we really wanted to perform and have our own shows and sh*t. So we started making our own music six or seven years ago. We brought in another homie and he taught us how to engineer and use FL Studio. From there, it was a wrap! Ever since I wrote my first whatever lil’ okie doke bar, I was like, “oh yeah, I’m in this thang.”

Everything happened by just messing around and then sh*t got real!

I was making my own beats and recording on them. Then, I just naturally connected with a group of people on the same sh*t. Everybody was rapping so I started engineering and doing everything in between...graphics, art, photography, videos...just everything behind the scenes. I was the glue. I was still rapping too though. I’m like, “I got a beat...rap on this, lay a verse. Alright...cool, now let’s make some cover art, then lets shoot a video.”

My mindset was just to figure everything out. Youtube. Google. I went to school, but school wasn’t nearly as fast as picking up a camera and just doing it. I just wanted to figure out how to do this thing...how to get the picture to look like that...as good as it could.

All the information is there. It’s just research. You start to learn the vocabulary and all that. Next thing you know, I’m shooting weddings and music videos, events, portraits. People were just like, “oh, you do this...here’s my money!” I’m like, “I’ve never done it, but I’ll do it.” It just turned into its own business. So I started a website with my services on there. One man show basically. Videos, logos, graphics, business cards, flyers, clothing prints, embroidery.

In my second year of college, I moved from Palmdale to Los Angeles. LA is crazy! It’s just so media infested. It’s always work.
